NOIR CITY returns to Phoenixville’s historical Colonial Theatre, November 15-17. Join FNF prez Eddie Muller for a three-day extravaganza featuring 10 films with the theme “Darkness Has No Borders”. This year’s program is tailored to satisfy folks who love noir that’s full of the colorful vernacular slang so essential to American and British noir—as well as adventurous viewers intrigued by a familiar story–a crime committed for passion or profit—playing out in cultures with different values, mores, and styles.
The festival opens Friday night with a salute to pulp writer Cornell Woolrich, the new FNF-funded restoration of the 1952 Argentine film No abras nunca esa puerta (Never Open That Door) followed by the FNF preservation print of Si muero antes de despertar (If I Should Die Before I Wake – 1952 Argentina) - the last part of a Cornell Woolrich trilogy originally planned for Never Open that Door but released as a stand-alone feature. Hollywood’s big screen adaptation of Woolrich’s Street of Chance (1952) finishes the evening. UCLA Film & Television Archive performed the restoration and preservation.
The Saturday matinee screenings comprise two prison break films, Black Tuesday (1954) and Jacques Becker’s Le trou (The Hole). The evening screenings feature two existential classics, the U.K. production The Bridge (1957) and Japan’s Zero no shoten (1961). Sunday’s program begins with two heist films, John Huston’s The Asphalt Jungle (1944) and Symphonie pour un massacre (1963). The festival closes with two L. A. set noirs Murder by Contract (1958) and Italy’s Smog (1962).
Schedule, singe feature tickets ($20), and double feature tickets ($40) are available on the Colonial Theatre’s website.

Book Review: "Death Was the Other Woman"
Linda L. Richards, 2007
I found this at a thriftshop, or used book sale, or something. Had it for a few years, made it my first read in my new noir apartment.
The twist of telling a detective story from the POV of his "Girl Friday" is the only attempt at originality in the book. All the other noir cliches are played annoyingly straight, and the historical inaccuracies and anachronisms were distracting.
Of the cliches, the most eye-rolling was Rita Hepplewhite: the curvy, buxom, 1940s-styled femme fatale...in 1931. This seductress character is a literal whore, professionally speaking. And they way she's described makes her a dead-ringer for Jessica Rabbit. You'd think this was a parody, but nothing funny ever happens.
Besides Rita's 1940s hair and curves in a time when "sexy" women were still tubular with bobbed hair, other distracting inaccuracies include the "businessmen jumping out of skyscrapers" myth as part of the heroine's backstory, and no less than three uses of the word "gunsel" to mean a gunslinger, in 1931.
It was enough of a page-turner to keep me reading, but I wasn't ever too invested.
Oh, and if you're wondering what the catchy title refers to? Absolutely nothing, bar the vague "it was all over a woman" cliche.
The book wasn't terrible, but I don't think I'll be keeping it either.

Out of all of the people The Ghost King Phantom expected to relate to, it definitely wasn’t the scrawny red headed photographer of the Daily Planet. Jimmy Olsen has gotten so many temporary superpowers over his time being Superman’s friend. Hell, he once gained a 4th dimensional being’s reality warping abilities when he was given said dimensional being’s powers during a fight. Sure there’s a dozen or so heroes with the same amount of powers he has, but none as suddenly granted to them as a all powerful god that can relate to a teenager.
#bones speaks#hi this is bones in the future: below tags I do mean but I was Not Sober while writing them so they may have severe spelling errors#bones prompts#dpxdc#dp x dc#just google the amount of times Jimmy has had powers and what they are. I just read a comic#where the F PLOT of all things is Jimmy getting superpowers and causing havoc in Metropolis. that’s how frequent this is#the all powerful god powers was in a recent Batman/Superman Worlds Finest issue where he got Mxyzptlk’s powers#like guys. there are SO many heroes that have more powers than Danny in DC.#off the top of the dome I can only name a few (in my defense I am Not Sober so memory is Not Good:)#Raven. The Spectre. Superman. The Atom. Batman (temporary powers). Dr Fate. Martian Manhunter#and I could name more if my memory wasn’t shot rn#this is a mini rant in the tags but I’m so tired of the ‘Danny has so many superpowers it would stump DC’#it would for sure shock them. but they wouldn’t be surprised. why are they all so shocked from Danny’s arrival?#I’ve made many posts about how much more interesting Danny simply being in the JL like it’s just another Tuesday would be interesting#so many folks enjoy the discovery aspect of Danny and not the part where he’s alreaady a JL member and is#*isnt OP. it’s so much more interesting to write a character with flaws. make him regular powered and able to be struck down by a Big Bad#and not just his weaknesses. he’s been beaten to shit by ghosts before. the angst possibilities is crazy.#Billy Batson looking at a kid nearly his age get hurt more and more by Black Adam? Fear Gas setting him on a rampage in Gotham absolutely#destroying his perception of what being safe is anymore. Lex Luther finding his weakness and wrecking his shit#it could be SUCH an interesting direction to take dpxdc but no one does. when I write prompts with those ideas they make a fraction of the#notes of the prompts where I pander and have batfam in them. diversity of ideas in fandom is what makes us strong. keep the new and#unorthodox ideas flowing. it feels like you’re swimming upstream but it’s worth it to help a fandom grow
